I know exactly what you mean and are trying to ask. Great for chamber and other classical stuff, but less friendly to jazz or the French side of classical.ДЇor jazz I prefer a super cheap metal clarinet I found online, but be prepared to spend a couple hundred on repairs with those, and know that not all of them restore well so they're a gamble. I loved it but think it's a bit less versatile than the R13. It's darker, more resistant, and more stable. It's a regular boehm system clarinet but with a bore design closer to the German clarinet.

There is one really interesting model to consider, the only one I might go for if I didn't already get an R13, and that's the Yamaha CSG.

I highly recommend the Rovner soft ligatures, made from leather or rubber coated cloth.ДЄs for the clarinet itself, I would recommend skipping the middle tier entirely and focusing on first ensuring your existing clarinet is well-maintained, and then saving for a used Buffet R13, pro Selmer, pro Leblanc, or pro Yamaha. It will tend to have a brighter sound.ДЄ closer facing mouthpiece will have a darker tone (think Sabine Meyer, though she also plays on a German clarinet which is a whole different fingering system), be harder to blow, and need a harder reed, but give finer control due to the resistance. A more open mouthpiece tip will require a softer reed, and will be more expressive and easy to play at a cost of stability. Mouthpieces are highly personal and they affect which strength of reed will work.

I agree with those saying first thing to spend money on is a good mouthpiece, reeds, and ligature.
